The first MAPT Conference was held in Livingston MT July 12-13, 1974. Early Board membership includes: Don Waldron, Dennis Espeland of Billings, Steve Jones of Billings, Gene Lukkes, Chuck Smith of Helena, Rod Johnson of Great Falls, Carl Whitmore of Melstone, Esther Nelson of Bozeman, Jim Romsa of Livingston, Norman Meili of Livingston, Jackie Alles of Lockwood and Terry Brown, State Transportation Director from the Office of Public Instruction. Membership in the MAPT shall be for one year, from one Annual MAPT Conference until the opening of the next. Early conference registration was around 200 which grew to close to 500 for the Conference in Hamilton in 2005. 2011 membership was 279 which could have been attributed to the flooding that was happening around the state. 2012 Registration was 357 with 18 vendors supporting the Conference.
The purpose of MAPT shall be: to promote communication between everyone involved in pupil transportation; to ensure that the pupil transportation provided is the best and safest means of transportation for all concerned; to inform the schools, the community and the general public of the need, services, and requirements of pupil transportation; to ensure that all qualified people have full and equal access to pupil transportation.
MAPT operates as an independent, non-political, non-profit corporation in the State of Montana.
